We are happy to announce that a week from now, on July 30th, a special treat for Vanilla Ninja fans is going to be released! The exclusive footage from behind the scenes of the “No Regrets” video shoot is going to be published on Bros Music’s official YouTube channel. The girls wish that with this material they can bring their fans closer not only to the beautiful scenery of yellow rapeseed fields and mysterious Schönow Castle but also the atmosphere on the set. Hopefully, the making-of will shed some new light on the creative process behind the video directed by Oliver Sommer and the song itself. Something definitely worth waiting for!
On July 15th, Vanilla Ninja visited ETV’s show “Ringvaade” to talk about their reunion and promote the newest, already second comeback single, “No Regrets”. Lenna, Piret and Katrin joined the host in the studio, while Triinu connected with them via a video call from Switzerland.
The girls’ showed a sneak-peek of the new music video for “No Regrets” and gave an interesting interview.
Among the points made during the conversation were:
– When asked whether they had come back to stay, Katrin answered that they were planning to stick around for at least 5 years (or hopefully even more, according to Piret)
– It turns out that Piret was the one that took it upon herself to invite Triinu back into Vanilla Ninja for the reunion. The first arrangements were made during a phone call.
– The girls had been considering the comeback for a long time and finally, in 2019, they decided the time was right. Had they not made up their minds then, the plan would have remained only a loose idea.
– How is the current Vanilla Ninja different from the band from 13 years ago? In Katrin’s opinion, the biggest difference is their music – there are some great, more peaceful tracks in their current repertoire that stand in contrast to the energetic rock songs she was originally expecting.
2 weeks ago, Estonian newspaper Eesti Päevaleht published a long interview with Piret Järvis-Milder. The conversation touched many interesting subjects, including Vanilla Ninja’s comeback.
Who came up with the idea that Vanilla Ninja should reunite again?
It may have been the end of 2018, when our former producer, David Brandes, called Lenna and asked whether we might have been interested in making a new album. Then, in January 2019, together with Lenna we flew to Germany, discussed the matter, sang in the first demos and decided to go on with it!
Did you also consider the option of Maarja’s return to the band?
Not really, because Maarja lives in America now and it would have been too difficult to form the band over such a long distance.
How much power has gone into Vanilla Ninja’s comeback?
The pace is now slower for a while, but there are some busy times behind us. We have been preparing and recording the new material since 2019, and now, there are 14 new songs ready. They are going to be released on our comeback album “Encore” on October 8th. This year we have already met twice for video shoots – once in Estonia and once in Berlin. At the end of June our first single in 13 years, “Gotta Get It Right”, was finally released. A lot of work has been done, and now we have reached the phase where we have to let the world know we are back. Since I have a child under the age of one at home, I have been doing a lot of preparations late in the evening and at night, when the baby is asleep and I have the first few hours in a day to be on my own. So some lyrics were born at night, and sometimes I had to practice playing an instrument at night and so on.
“No Regrets” is already the second single from the band’s comeback album “Encore”, which is set to premiere on October 8th. The record’s opening track, “Gotta Get It Right”, reached the audience in June. While “Gotta Get It Right” was stylistically similar to the band’s previous creations, “No Regrets” shows Vanilla Ninja, who has been cultivating pop-rock so far, in a completely new and surprising light.
If someone had told us, in our early years, that one day we’d be doing folk, we would have taken it as a joke. – laughs Vanilla Ninja’s main vocalist, Lenna Kuurmaa. But here we are now. Personally, I warmed up my violin playing skills for the new song. I had not held a violin in years!
Members of Vanilla Ninja, Lenna Kuurmaa and Piret Järvis-Milder, were guests on Raadio Sky Plus’ morning broadcast “Hommikuprogramm”, where they talked about Vanilla Ninja’s reunion and why the band had decided to break up years ago and come together again now.
Vanilla Ninja and David Brandes’ paths diverged years ago simply because their visions did not go hand in hand. We parted ways with David, we changed the record label, our visions did not go together. By our side, we found people who cheered on and encouraged us and said that our ideas were also good. Near the end, it was hard to say a word to David because he was the boss. In David’s example, one man did everything. Every area needs a specialist in their field to make the whole better, and we decided it was time to split up.
Yesterday evening, Vanilla Ninja attended the Estonian TV show “Ringvaade”. Lenna, Katrin and Piret visited the studio in Tallinn, while Triinu joined from Switzerland via video call. They answered some questions during a short interview and shared a sneak peek of the new video for “No Regrets”. While “Gotta Get it Right” had a style similar to the previous Vanilla Ninja songs, “No Regrets” is a real revelation. The track itself is a surprise for the fans as it’s folk-influenced, with Lenna playing the violin. She also sings most of it, with only a short part being performed by Triinu.
At the end of 2018, a former Vanilla Ninja producer David Brandes contacted Lenna, one of the original band members, and came forward with an initial plan for the ninja-girls’ reunion.
After the producer had come up with the plan, Lenna and Piret flew to Germany together to discuss the matter and an agreement was quickly reached. We sang the first demos and decided to go on with it. – said Piret in an interview with Eesti Päevaleht.
Vanilla Ninja shared wonderful news on their social media – the new single is coming sooner than expected! “No Regrets” will be released on 16.07.2021. The song described as “giving a positive impression with wonderful Irish-folk elements” is sung mostly by Lenna. The accompanying music video will have its premiere on YouTube on the same day.
