Vanilla Ninja in Hommikuprogramm

Members of Vanilla Ninja, Lenna Kuurmaa and Piret Järvis-Milder, were guests on Raadio Sky Plus’ morning broadcast “Hommikuprogramm”, where they talked about Vanilla Ninja’s reunion and why the band had decided to break up years ago and come together again now.
Vanilla Ninja and David Brandes’ paths diverged years ago simply because their visions did not go hand in hand. We parted ways with David, we changed the record label, our visions did not go together. By our side, we found people who cheered on and encouraged us and said that our ideas were also good. Near the end, it was hard to say a word to David because he was the boss. In David’s example, one man did everything. Every area needs a specialist in their field to make the whole better, and we decided it was time to split up.

Vanilla Ninja for Kroonika

I like the fact that I won’t have to tell my child all the fun stories when I’m in the rocking chair, but instead she can now become a part of that story herself, – says Piret Järvis-Milder, who now, 15 years later, is rocking again as a part of Vanilla Ninja.

Last year, Vanilla Ninja announced they were coming back after a 15-year long pause. „We’ve been working on some new music together with David Brandes and a special surprise is that Triinu has rejoined the band.” wrote Piret in one of her social media posts. Vanilla Ninja’s new single „Gotta Get It Right”, recorded with their former manager David Brandes, was released just before Midsummer.

Vanilla Ninja was formed in 2002. It then consisted of Lenna Kuurmaa (35), Katrin Siska (37), Piret Järvis-Milder (37) and Maarja Kivi (35). Maarja left the band in 2004 due to pregnancy. Maarja’s place in Vanilla Ninja was filled by Triinu Kivilaan (32) from Viljandi. The comeback’s now being carried out by the band embodied by Lenna, Katrin, Piret and Triinu.

Piret says that their first appearance with the new material will take place at the beginning of August on German TV. However, it’s too early to state when the first full-length concert will happen.

We’ll see what else is corona planning to do with our lives. If we still have to dance to its tune before people are able to sing and dance to ours. But you can’t carry on without the concerts. We’re hoping that next summer, at the latest, we’ll be able to bring a live performance of our biggest hits to the audience in Estonia. – says Piret. According to her, coronavirus strongly affected their plans. In normal circumstances, we would’ve all recorded the album together in Germany but instead we had to do it remotely from various countries. It was really quite difficult because we were lacking live feedback and sometimes it led to the double amount of work – when it turned out that the recording made in Estonia still wasn’t right. Additionally, I felt we were really missing the possibility to sit in one place together, see each other and discuss the issues.

Maarja Kivi-Meriste: this new Vanilla Ninja album is a surprise also to me

Vanilla Ninja, a girlband extremely popular in their times, announced a return some time ago and informed they were not coming back in the original line-up, with Triinu Kivilaan rejoining Lenna Kuurmaa, Piret Järvis-Milder and Katrin Siska. But why wasn’t Maarja Kivi-Meriste, now living in Los Angeles, invited to join? Long distance can’t be the obstacle taking into consideration that Katrin Siska, for example, lives in Cape Town.
To be absolutely honest, this new album is a surprise also to me, just like the fact that they are working with David Brandes again. – reveals Maarja Kivi in an interview with Sky.ee.
Shortly after Maarja left the band, Vanilla Ninja signed for the new record label, which years later became the doom for the whole band.
It’s funny, how the world runs. But time heals all wounds. Given the fact that I wasn’t involved this time, I wouldn’t expect any cooperation in the nearest future. – said Kivi.

Piret about Vanilla Ninja’s comeback

Last week, former Vanilla Ninja members revealed on their social media that they were going to reunite and release a new album next year.
Actually, I guess you could say that the new Vanilla Ninja will sound like the old Vanilla Ninja. We don’t want to shock anybody, so I think those people, that liked Vanilla Ninja’s music 15 years ago, will be happy, because the sound remains quite the same. What I really like is that we are not going to try out a new, modern sound image, but stick to our roots. – said Piret Järvis-Milder in Raadio 2’s morning show “Hommikus!”.
